School Council
The School Council’s Teacher Lead is Miss Wade.
Intent
At Skerne Park Academy our school council aims to provide a safe, happy and fair learning environment. We take an active role in organising school events and provide opportunities for pupil voice. Pupils are given the opportunity to express their views and make positive contributions towards the school. We work with other communities/organisations to allow new experiences, healthy lifestyles and a broader curriculum to be achieved. Through our school council meetings we teach the children skills they need to be able to make decisions which impact positively upon our school.
Implementation
As a school, we value our School Counsellors as their voice and ideas are integral to making our school the inspiring, joyful and enthusiastic place it is. The election of our school counsellors is held annually at the start of each academic year. Every child in our school is given the opportunity to write a speech in which they present themselves for election, to staff and pupils. Children then vote democratically for who they feel will suit the roles of a school counsellor. Each class votes for their own class counsellors who represent them at the fortnightly meetings. Once these children have been elected, we then vote for the other roles within the council. These roles include chair, vice chair, treasurer and secretary. School council meetings are held fortnightly where the council’s secretary takes minutes. These minutes are then fed back to everyone within the school. At Skerne Park we use pupil voice as a way of communicating everyone’s ideas and opinions. During our meetings, every idea, question or opinion from across year groups is listened to and discussed. These discussions then form our projects or next steps.
Impact
Our children will have the knowledge and skills to be able to make appropriate decisions and express their opinions respectfully. The children experience a democratic vote and show mutual respect and tolerance through this. It will provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them.
Sports Council
The School Sports Council is made up of enthusiastic students who are passionate about sports, fitness, and teamwork. Our mission is to promote active lifestyles, organize events, and represent students’ ideas to make school sports even better.

- Represent students’ voices in planning sports activities and facilities.

What do we do?
- Host exciting sports events and competitions in schools.
- Cheer on school teams at sporting events inside and outside of school.
- Lead fun health and fitness activities to keep everyone active.
- Sports council meetings to decide on playground games and ordering new equipment
Eco Council
We are proud to share that our school has been awarded Green Flag status this year, a fantastic achievement that recognises our commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. But this is just the beginning!
Our Eco Council plays a vital role in helping our school become more environmentally friendly and educating our whole school community on the importance of caring for our planet.
What is the Eco Council?
The Eco council is a group of enthusiastic pupils and staff who work together to make our school greener and more sustainable. We have members from each class from Year1 upwards that are passionate about protecting the environment and bringing positive change to our school community.
What do we do?
Throughout the year, the Eco Council:
- Leads projects to reduce waste, energy and water use
- Promotes recycling and litter reduction around school
- Encourages biodiversity through planting and caring for green spaces
- Organises Eco Days, competition, and awareness campaigns
- Working with the wider community to support environmental indicatives
We meet regularly to discuss new ideas, review progress, and plan actions that support our goals
Our Green Flag success
Achieving Green Flag status is a recognition of all the hard work our Eco Council has done so far. This award shows that we are taking real action to make a difference, but we’re not stopping here.
What’s next?
Our goal is to continue developing our Eco work by:
- Involving even more pupils and new activities
- Building partnerships with local environment groups
- Exploring new ways to make our school more sustainable
- Using the outside learning to support our wellbeing and help us connect with nature.
- Linking in with OPAL
