PSHE & RSE
What do we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy, we follow the Jigsaw programme for PSHE and RSE. PSHE is taught in discrete lessons each week with a holistic and mindful approach. Children focus on a new theme every half term throughout the year, meaning year on year, children’s knowledge, skills and experiences are deepened and enhanced through a layered approach. The 6 key themes for all year groups are: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Throughout each theme, relevant British Values are also explored.
In addition to weekly lessons, children also experience PSHE through various celebration and awareness days throughout the year, such as Black History Month and Kindness Week.
Why do we teach what we teach?
Each PSHE lesson begins with a calming self-regulation exercise that allows the children to focus on their breathing and reflect on how they are feeling. Within each lesson, children explore key ideas, themes and issues and can be curious and discuss. Through this exploratory and mindful approach, children become equipped with the tools, skills and attributes to become independent, thoughtful, accepting and kind members of our diverse society. Children develop an awareness of themselves and their peers, as well as understanding the importance of taking care of both their physical and mental health.
Why do we teach it in that sequence?
PSHE is purposefully taught in a specific sequence; each half term focusses on the same theme, meaning children from nursery to year 6 are focussing on the same theme at the same time. This allows for a whole school approach and vision, as well as linking in meaningful assemblies for all children. Themes towards the beginning of the year focus on self-reflection and setting goals for the future, whereas towards the end of the year, children are focussing on transitioning and changing. The themes are representative and within context to where the children are within the school year.
This approach also means that themes are familiar to the children and provides a layered approach whereby learning is built up year on year. Each PSHE lesson is age-appropriate whilst carefully ensuring children feel comfortable and confident as they navigate their personal, social and health education.
