The Early Years are crucial for building strong and lasting foundations. At Skerne Park, we believe these experiences must be of the highest of quality. By working in partnership with you, we strive to create a stimulating and engaging environment, whereby children and adults can explore, play, learn and grow together. We nurture your child’s personal, social, and emotional development, communication, and language skills, as well as their physical growth. These experiences shape your child’s ability to learn, build relationships and navigate the world around them. We celebrate the uniqueness of every child, fostering their strengths, confidence, and independence to help them thrive.
Our Approach
At the heart of our educational philosophy is play-based learning, a proven approach that uses play as the foundation for teaching and nurturing children’s development. We believe children learn best when they are engaged, curious, and having fun, which is why play is central to everything we do in Reception. Through our carefully designed curriculum, we aim to provide children with the knowledge, skills, and qualities they will carry with them throughout life. Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of learning, encourage children to remain curious, ask questions and wonder about the world; exploring how things work. We believe that while what children learn matters, how they learn is even more important. Learning should align with their interests making it meaningful, relevant, and lasting. By leading their own learning, children develop essential skills such as self-direction, intrinsic motivation, independence, creativity, and confidence.
The Role of the Adult
All our staff are highly experienced and work closely with every child. In Reception as adults, we place great importance on listening to the voice of the child. We actively seek to understand their interests, the questions they are curious about, and what they would like to explore further. Through observation we support and guide children, providing children with appropriate resources to develop their next steps; helping them discover how exciting and rewarding learning can be! By fostering their natural curiosity, we aim to nurture a love of learning that will stay with them for life.
Our Learning Environment
Our learning environment is the key to the realisation of our vision both indoors and outdoors. Our environment is warm and welcoming and promotes high levels of involvement. The environment is carefully planned with each space providing many open-ended resources for children to explore; motivating the children to become fully involved in their explorations and spark curiosity through a range of learning experiences.
When children leave Reception, we hope that they will have:
- A lifelong enthusiasm for learning
- Confidence in themselves and respect for themselves and others
- A sense of awe and wonder of the world
- A broad and solid knowledge base
- An ability to work and communicate with others
- A ‘voice’
- Confidence to take risks both physically and in their learning
