PE
What do we teach?
We teach a PE curriculum that provides all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. We teach children to develop their basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability to be determined and resilient and build foundations for a healthy active lifestyle. Through a personalised curriculum, inter and intra-school competitions, development days and highly skilled coaches we aim to raise the profile of PE and expose our children to sports they may never have had the opportunity to engage with. Children in Year 5 and Year 6 access swimming for a full term at a local leisure centre to meet the national curriculum objectives before they leave primary school.
Children from EYFS to Year 6 access a PE scheme called IPEP. Within this scheme we have produced a tailored curriculum overview that meets curriculum standards. This allows teachers to easily assess gaps in learning which in turn allows for effective planning and progress. This is enhanced with Go Well coaches and our school coach who upskill staff and provide high quality teaching of PE and development days which allow children to access activities they may never have accessed before.
Children are provided with opportunities to attend tournaments and festivals across all year groups throughout the year and we always end the year at school with a Sports Week including our annual Sports Day.
Each half term we also award a Sports Star based on the School Games Sports values to promote a different value of being a Sportsperson.
Why do we teach what we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire children to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. Through use of our PE sport premium, we have been able to upskill teachers in their ability to plan and teach PE as well as focus on progress. Teaching PE and ensuring pupils have access to a sufficient daily activity can play a crucial role in developing our children’s fine and gross motor skills. Our PE curriculum is designed to support the development of our children’s fine and gross motor skills (developing their muscles strength) starting in EYFS. These skills are foundational for children’s physical, cognitive and emotional growth and are integral to their overall learning experience. Our curriculum also gives children ownership over their health, wellbeing, and safety in both the real and digital world. They understand how to promote healthy minds and bodies through a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the competitive aspect of life thus promoting resilience and optimism.
Why do we teach it in that sequence?
At SPA, PE consists of a diverse range of activities that physically move the body and incorporate exercise and team playing. Through using our PE scheme IPEP our tailored curriculum overview shows the order of PE blocks for each year group throughout the year. These PE blocks have also been matched up to any external coaches and tournaments/festivals occurring throughout the year. Each PE block comes with a set of lessons to be taught which include videos to support both teachers and pupils, lesson plans with how to differentiate effectively, list of equipment needed and assessment criteria. Alongside this is a ‘Progression of Skills’ document to support teachers in how to progress children further and give them an idea of what they have learnt in the previous year group. Each block of PE is designed to teach children skills to achieve certain objectives within that PE area linked to sports. The final lesson of the block then assesses all these skills in one activity to see if progress has been made. To cater for mixed year group classes, PE blocks have been assigned where the younger children in the class will access the lower ability tasks and the older will access the higher ability tasks where applicable. Those who demonstrate great skills may be able to access the higher tasks.
