Maths
What do we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy we teach children maths using the White Rose maths scheme supported by a range of mathematical resources. This scheme is an ambitious, connected curriculum accessible to all pupils from EYFS-Year 6. In addition to White Rose we use Plan Panion, Gareth Metcalfe – I see reasoning and Rising Stars picture maths to further enhance the children mathematical understanding. We have a ‘maths cycle’ approach to our lessons, which allow children to explore new mathematical concepts using the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract) methods.
Why do we teach it?
Our curriculum embraces the National Curriculum aims and provides guidance to help pupils become visualisers, describers and experimenters. The curriculum provides our children with an understanding of maths through a process of higher order thinking which involves enquiry, reasoning and problem solving.
Why do we teach in that sequence?
To learn maths effectively, some things have to be learned before others and an emphasis has been put on the number skills first and then carefully ordered through the curriculum. Our curriculum supports children in becoming fluent in the fundamentals of maths and allows them to be able to reason and problem solve.
