What do we teach?

In our school we follow the National Curriculum guidance, where skills and knowledge are taught progressively. What we teach inspires a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We organise this learning in blocks allowing for depth of learning through enquiry. We organise this learning in topics, allowing for depth of learning through enquiry, investigation and fact finding. We follow Plan Bee as a scheme to support our learning.  We also support our learning with Digimaps – an award-winning mapping service online mapping website. This enables children to have instant access to a variety of maps – from OS, Aerial and Historical at their fingertips.

Why do we teach what we teach?

 In Geography lessons, we believe what we teach matters and has purpose. All lessons are discrete and not tokenistic.  We give children the opportunity to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world as well as their place in it. We, as teachers make sure we have a clear understanding of what the children need before they can acquire further knowledge and apply in context.  We make sure we use the local environment / links to ensure relevant, purposeful learning where appropriate.

 Why do we teach it in that sequence?

We teach a progression of skills and knowledge throughout our school which is built upon year by year. All is planned to suit where are children are at on their learning journey and differentiated appropriately. By nature, geography is an investigative subject which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge, and skills. Our sequence of learning develops these skills which are progressive. These skills can then be applied throughout their time at school and beyond.
