French
What do we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy, language learning is fun and interactive, focusing on our speaking and listening skills as a foundation to later develop writing and reading skills. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop our pupil’s skills in languages (French) through regular taught lessons. Planned units allow pupils to develop the key vocabulary and grammar skills to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, understanding and responding to its speaker. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to communicate and apply language learning in a practical, meaningful context.
Why do we teach what we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy, we believe that learning an additional language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils. We aspire to expose our pupils to a MFL curriculum, which is rich in skills and knowledge, to develop a cultural understanding to produce enthusiastic and life-long language learners.
Why do we teach it in that sequence?
We teach French so that is clearly follows a development in knowledge and skills from Year 3 to Year 6. We also use our progressive skills approach to ensure that prior learning is the basis for new learning and that skills are undertaken in a layered approach. Each year group has clearly marked skills and knowledge for each topic that they undertake.
