Computing

What do we teach?

We teach our children about technology and the skills needed to use that technology safely and effectively. We teach our children how to solve problems linked to technology in a variety of ways. We use Kapow to structure our teaching as it breaks computing down into year group stages that progress fluidly from one into the other.

Why do we teach what we teach?

Technology is now embedded into our society therefore it is crucial that children know how to use technology safely and effectively. Computer literacy skills are fast becoming a requisite for many jobs therefore we believe the sooner our children can become computer literate the better it will be for them as they progress through school and life. Primary computing will lay the foundations for their computing skills as they begin to use computers regularly in everyday life.

Why do we teach it in that sequence?

In EYFS, pupil begin to understand the language associated with technology as well as explore how it is used. In KS1 we introduce our children to the physical aspects of computing. The children become more familiar with basic features and functions of different technologies and being able to recognise them. By KS2, children use computers for work and research including being able to save and locate their own work. We believe that teaching in this order builds upon foundations that are essential for computer literacy. By using technology regularly children become familiar very quickly. We teach all children about the importance of internet safety as we are aware that more children are using technology from younger ages than in previous years.
