Art

What do we teach?

At Skerne Park Academy, we teach art through the Kapow Primary School scheme. Each year group features a formal elements and skills topic. The formal elements topic focuses on the teaching of discreet skills: line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, and colour. The skills topic focuses on specifically developing pupils’ art, craft, and design skills. Pupils study the work of artists and are inspired to create their own artwork.

Why do we teach what we teach?

The intention of art at Skerne Park Academy is for pupils to enjoy expressing themselves through a variety of art forms and styles. The scheme develops discrete skills and techniques of drawing, painting, design and crafting.

Why do we teach it in that sequence?

Pupils learn, develop, and control the skills necessary to design and create a variety of art. They are taught how to use various mediums and how to manipulate these within different art forms. Pupils take inspiration from artists to develop their own artwork, studying the lives of these artists and their inspirations. They begin to discuss, compare, and evaluate their work and the work of others.

These skills are revisited each year through different projects and aim to secure knowledge and skills in art.
