What do we teach?
At Skerne Park Academy, we teach music through the Charanga Music School scheme. It is a practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. Pupils learn music through listening, appraising, and experimenting with rhythm and sound.
Year 1 pupils follow the Little Fingers scheme led by Durham Music service. Musical skills are learnt through singing games and rhymes and by developing children’s confidence in using percussion instruments.
In Key Stage 2 there are music tuition opportunities in the ukulele and guitar.
Why do we teach what we teach?
The intention of music at Skerne Park Academy is for pupils to appreciate and listen to different genres of music that they may not otherwise gain exposure to. We also encourage our pupils to express themselves through rhythm and sound.
Why do we teach it in that sequence?
Musical skills are learnt and revisited each year. From exploring sound in EYFS to performing songs in upper KS2, children experience music across each phase, building upon prior learning as they go. Learning musical concepts through different musical activities enables a better understanding of musical skills. The range of music genres taught allows pupils to develop and identify their own interests and talents.
