Science

What do we teach?

We implement our science teaching through a pedagogy that puts children’s natural curiosity at the heart of learning. We follow the national curriculum and scaffold learning using the teaching scheme Kapow.  Investigations fill our lessons and pupils are taught what it means to ‘work scientifically’. Key knowledge, skills and vocabulary are carefully and progressively planned to ensure they are layered and embedded successfully.

Why do we teach it?

At Skerne Park Academy we want to inspire all children to confidently explore and discover the world around them and deepen their understanding of the world in which they live. We want to nurture every child’s innate curiosity through exciting, hands-on learning experiences, promoting a love and thirst for scientific learning and in doing so, create inquisitive, independent learners.

Why do we teach in that sequence?

Our curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills are built upon each year. We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the science National Curriculum and Early Years foundation stage but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. As the children’s knowledge and understanding increases, and they become more proficient in selecting and using scientific equipment, collating and interpreting results, they become increasingly confident in their growing ability to come to conclusions based on real evidence.
